Image SEO for local businesses: Which photos really attract customers

A picture is worth a thousand words – and in local marketing, it often determines whether someone clicks on your link. According to Google, profiles with photos receive 42% more requests for directions. But be careful: not every picture helps.

Avoid the typical mistake made by many websites: glossy stock photos of smiling people in suits who obviously don’t work in your office. Local customers want authenticity. They want to know who they are entrusting their car, their hair, or their accounting to.

You need these types of images in your Google business profile:

1. The exterior view (recognition)

Help customers find you. A good photo of your storefront or office building helps with on-site orientation. Take photos in good weather and make sure your company sign is legible.

2. The team at work

Show “action.” A master mechanic under the lift, a baker at the oven, or a consultant in conversation (with consent). This demonstrates competence and creates approachability.

3. Before/after (The proof)

Especially for tradespeople, cleaning services, or gardeners: nothing sells better than the result. Upload these images regularly. Google loves fresh content.

4. Atmosphere & interior

Essential for restaurants, cafés, or practices: what does it look like inside? Is it cozy? Clean? Modern? Take away the customer’s fear of crossing the threshold.

Pro tip for SEO: File names & geotags

Before you upload the image, rename it.
Bad: IMG_2934.jpg
Good: dental-cleaning-practice-mueller-duesseldorf.jpg This helps Google classify the image thematically and geographically (image SEO).
